Torres returning to coach OHS Lady Brahman basketball

Posted

OKEECHOBEE- Former Okeechobee High School girls basketball coach Jovanny Torres is returning to coach the Lady Brahmans next season.

Torres annouced he was back on his social media and added that he wasn’t wasting anytime in getting ready for the new season.

“Summer conditioning is right around the corner,” said Torres. “If you know any girls looking to play basketball at OHS next year reach out for dates and times. We’re gonna get this girls program back on track and we’re not waiting until November to do it.”

Torres helped lead the Lady Brahmans basketball team on an amazing run during his time as head coach. When he took over the reigns of the program in 2018, the team hadn’t been a true threat in the playoffs for over 30 years. Under his leadership the team secured back-to-back district championships.

The Lady Brahmans only went on to win seven games during his first season as head coach in 2018-19 school year. But throughout the year the team showed flashes of the eventual powerhouse that they’d become. Early on in the season, a young freshman named Adryauna Baker turned heads with a near quadruple double performance against Port St. Lucie, with 6 points, 19 steals, 9 rebounds, 8 assists and 2 blocks.

In 2019-20 the Lady Brahmans finished with a 20-7 record and entered the playoffs ranked second in their district. They accomplished their goal of getting to the district championship, but fell to Jensen Beach in that game 57-54.

The next season, in a year plagued with interruptions due to COVID-19, the Lady Brahmans not only returned to the district championship, but dominated the game. Okeechobee beat Fort Pierce Westwood 50-13 to claim their championship

During 2021-22 Okeechobee managed to pull off a repeat, earning back-to-back district championships with a 47-36 win over Rockledge. They followed that performance up with a dramatic overtime win in the regional semifinal over the Norland Lady Vikings to advance to their first ever regional final, only one game away from the state tournament.
